Product Description
916 Series Wide Groove Stringing Block for Large Diameter Conductor Pulls
Large conductors fail at the contact patch, not at the frame. When a 50mm class ACSR or a big AAC bundle runs over an undersized groove, the strands take a concentrated radial load and the outer layer flattens long before the rated load of the block is reached. The SHDN916-125 answers that with a 125mm wide MC nylon groove on the standard 916mm frame: the same 50KN rating and the same hanger, but a groove that spreads pressure over a wider arc and accepts the bigger conductor diameters used on 750kV and 1000kV work.
Standard and Wide Groove Versions
| Item No. | Model | Sheaves | Rated Load (kN) | Weight (kg) | Groove |
| 10151 | SHDN916 | 1 | 50 | 51 | Standard MC nylon groove |
| 10151 | SHDN916-125 | 1 | 50 | 60 | Wide 125mm MC nylon groove |
| 10152 | SHSQN916 | 3 | 75 | 120 | MC nylon sheaves |
| 10153 | SHWQN916 | 5 | 150 | 200 | MC nylon sheaves |
The wide groove option can also be specified on the three and five sheave builds, where the bundle geometry uses the same conductor.
Why Groove Width Matters More Than Frame Strength
-
Contact pressure: pressure on the conductor falls roughly in proportion to the contact arc length. Widening the groove and matching the radius to the conductor keeps the strand layer inside its elastic range, which removes the flattened outer strands that show up after a hard pull.
-
Side wall clearance: the wide profile leaves room for conductor movement when the block hangs slightly out of plumb, so the conductor is guided instead of pinched against a side wall.
-
Nylon contact face: MC nylon is soft against aluminium and does not form a galvanic couple, so coated and greased conductors come out of the groove without burnishing.
-
Grip on the frame: the wide wheel carries 60kg instead of 51kg, and the extra mass sits low in the frame, which helps the block hang stable on a slack conductor.
Matching the Block to the Conductor
As a working rule, use the standard groove up to about 40mm conductor diameter and move to the 125mm groove above that, or whenever the conductor has a pronounced outer profile such as a gap type ACSR. For bundle work, keep every block in the pull on the same groove option so the sub conductors run at the same height. Confirm hanger bolt diameter and crossarm spacing against the drawing before ordering, and keep the first block at least ten times the sheave diameter behind the tensioner.
Inspection Records Supplied
Each unit is built from inspected castings and a machined nylon wheel; groove radius, groove width and radial runout are measured on every wheel, bearings are checked for seating before assembly, and the finished block is proof loaded and spun under load. Blocks are serial numbered and supplied with an inspection sheet. A 1.5 times rated load certificate, groove measurement report and third party inspection record are available against the order drawing when the project requires documentation.
Packing and Service
Blocks are crated in plywood cases with the groove and hanger eye protected, and heavy units are marked with lifting points. Stock models ship in 3 to 7 days, monthly output is around 300 pieces, and wheels, bearings and keeper pins are stocked as service parts so a scored groove is a wheel swap rather than a new block.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the wide groove be supplied on a three sheave block? Yes, specify it on the order as the groove option for all wheels.
Can groove radius be made to my conductor drawing? Yes, radius and width can be machined to the buyer drawing.
Is a metal groove version available for the same frame? Yes, aluminium and rubber lined wheels fit the 916 frame and can be ordered as spares or as a complete alternative build.
